HUMMINGBIRDS, EXOTIC AND BIRDS FROM TRAVEL AS PHOTOGRAPHED BY GERARD PAS

Hummingbirds are a marvel to behold for all of us whenever we see them. Flapping their wings up to 70 times per second in hovering flight they fly from flower to flower dipping their long bills inside the flower to extract nectar (they also eat tiny insects). The best part of photographing Hummingbirds is that you learn to see their behaviour. They often aggressively argue with each over territory while chattering away in song which many people are unaware of as they haven’t stopped to listen. Hummingbirds must also consider that they live in a world cohabitated by other creatures which also survive from the same food source nectar; such as bees, wasps and other insects, some of which are equally as aggressive.
“Hummingbirds provide a unique challenge to any photographer but that aside they remain one of my favourite of all birds. One can sit in the heat of a fall day and simply wait for these the tiniest of all birds to come darting into the field of vision while enjoying the beauty of any garden. They remain a wonder to me!” GP

We have also included some photos of birds that are not natural inhabitants of North America which Gerard has photographed in captivity. While Gerard has only been photographing birds for a short while, from time to time he does travel and we hope to expand on photographs from these trips as he has turned his focus on birds, wildlife and nature. “I hope to include more outings to photograph regional wildlife, primarily birds, as I travel with my art for international exhibitions. I now also plan my holidays on what birds I might see and photograph while on them, such as photographing the birds (Hummingbirds) of Costa Rica or the Shorebirds of The Netherlands, both future planned trips.” GP
