AMPIBIANS AND REPTILES AS PHOTOGRAPHED BY GERARD PAS |
Amphibians find themselves with the sad distinction of being the quickest dying species on our planet. Whole sub-species and varieties are going extinct with an alarming rate. At least one-third of the world's known amphibians are threatened by the combination of fungus attacks, and up to 122 species have become extinct within the past 25 years. The USA already has mass contamination of frogs infected with this recent virulent fungus and yet the U.S. Department of “Fish and Wildlife” has not yet called for a “status review”. It’s a damn sad day to be a frog wherever you may live in this world. “When growing as a boy, snakes and frogs where the better part of immeasurable pleasure in finding, hunting, and trying to grab them on the fresh water lakes or meadows of Southern Ontario, Canada. I lament the fact that these wonderful little amphibians are facing such a challenge in our modern world and so when I see them they make me smile, except of course the rubber one in my tub that just makes me laugh. I also enjoy seeing snakes and while we have one species of poisonous snake here in Southern Ontario I look for them wherever I may be photographing in the wild.” Gerard Pas As Gerard has stated above, he loves amphibians as well as reptiles and we hope to see this aspect of his wildlife gallery grow in time; thus we have dedicated a gallery specifically for this species. |
