RESIDENT BIRDS OF SOUTHERN CANADA AS PHOTOGRAPHED BY GERARD PAS

Gerard lives in London, Canada, which is in South Western Ontario, just under two hour’s drive from Point Pelee the most southern point in all of Canada. London, Ontario is on the 43 parallel and is located at the most northern tip of the Carolinian Forest, which is forest made up of mixed broad-leaf trees (deciduous) and extends down into the Southern United States.  The majority of birds which inhabit these forests are “songbirds.” This gallery conveys birds that live here all year long or are “common to southern Canada”. Most of these birds spend the entire year here, from the harshness of winter to the heat of summer. The exceptions are birds which come from the northern Boreal Forests and spend their winters here like the Junco.
Many of the birds photographed in this gallery live around Gerard and his family’s home all year long and are very familiar to them, some almost by name as they frequent his feeders. Though we may see these birds as common here, we know that the Cardinal for example, is a beautiful and wonderful bird to see for persons from Europe or abroad, yet there are more Cardinals in London than any other city in Canada according to the yearly Audubon bird census. We hope you enjoy Gerard’s neighbours.
