In 1998 in my series “The Saints”, I painted an oil painting of a “Saint with Hearing Aid in Tdd – Tty Symbols” subtitled “I speak another language, sign!” In this painting I used the international symbol for hearing loss and also an archival image I had of Vancouver Artist John Anderson producer of The Gina Show as the model.
I decided to revisit this entire body of work “The Saints” as a photographic series. I took my original painting and combined the image of “hearing loss symbol” from it with this portrait of Carolyn Bell. I wanted the direct reference to the earlier work and this is why I elected to leave the Celtic knots from that original painting instead of just using the generic graphic blue and white “hearing loss” symbol in this new piece.
I’ve learned a whole new level of respect for the “Deaf and Hard of Hearing. As a cultural minority” since teaching at Fanshawe College - Fine Art and having deaf students and translators in my daily teaching life. I started asking questions about dreams and sounds if you had never heard a sound.
I realize that my simple photo and painting are meager contributions but they are a minimal salute, honouring a struggle for those of us who hear to open our minds and provide accessibility particularly in the Arts... |
