Saint with a Nasal Cannula — The Art World Could Use Some Oxygen

This series of photographs is inspired from after a painting in my series of paintings "The Saints" 1998-1999.
That series can be found by clicking here: The Saints

In my original painting you see a rendition of Albrecht Durer’s portrait of his mother at age 63, taken from one of his charcoal drawings. It was drawn just a few months before she died and I always felt it to be a very compelling study. I repainted it to make my own comments on the “human condition”: that not only in strength but also our weakness is when we realize our full potential to be completely human. I added the nasal cannula to give it more tension but also as a reference to my own aging father who used a nasal cannula in the later years of his life until his death in 2010.
In this new rendition I think the title says everything I could possibly write about it now: The art world could use some oxygen.
